The Kansas man told KAKE that while a thick black smoke was filling his home, his 6-year-old dog, Monroe, woke him from a Sunday afternoon nap.

“I feel like I haven’t even processed this yet. Yeah, I don’t know. I mean it’s hard to put into words,” Revel said. “She’s my best friend, man. She’s a good dog. She’s my hero right now. And I really I’m really proud of her.”

Revel said Monroe “didn’t even hesitate” when she sensed that the house was on fire.

“She knew something was wrong. She had to get me out of there. And that’s what she did,” he said.

Revel said he and Monroe were able to make it out of the house “in the nick of time.”

“I think if she wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have made it out alive for sure,” he said.

As he sorts through what’s left of his home, Revel said he’s focusing on the good.

“I think we take a lot for granted, you know. All that stuff in there isn’t what matters,” he said. “It can always be replaced. She can’t. I can’t. It is a very humbling experience.”
