Fleas and ticks can be a nuisance for both people and their pets. Not only do these pests cause itching and discomfort, but they can also spread diseases like Lyme disease or bartonellosis to humans and animals alike. Therefore it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and your furry friends from fleas and ticks as much as possible.

Start by making sure that you regularly inspect any areas your pet frequents – like the yard, kennel, or bed – for signs of flea activity such as tiny black-brown specks (flea dirt) or small orangey-brown insects themselves. If you spot anything suspicious it’s best to treat the area immediately with an over-the-counter insecticide designed for outdoor flea control, such as permethrin. Additionally ask your vet about other options such as prescription topical medications, oral treatments, or collars that may better suit your pet’s needs.

Next always check your pup for signs of fleas/ticks after being outdoors by running a fine-toothed metal comb through their coat while inspecting fur closely – this will help identify these parasites before they have a chance to hitch a ride into your home! To make things easier buy special grooming tools like combs specifically designed to capture any critters lurking in your pup’s fur. If you find something don’t panic – just remove it carefully with tweezers then dispose of it properly – never crush the parasite between two fingers since doing so could spread potentially infectious bodily fluids.

Finally, keep up with regular preventative treatments besides just spot checks especially if you live in an area with high tick populations. Many veterinarians now offer yearly packages that provide comprehensive coverage against external parasites as well as internal worms too –ask around for what is best suited for your pup! With these precautions in mind, you should have no problem keeping fleas/ticks away from both you and your pup’s living spaces!
